Description

Dr Joyce Goggin takes Randy Martin's insights on finance, games and toys from The Financialization of Daily Life as the starting point for a discussion of the economic education of children, and the current trend to gamifying finance. Specifically, she discusses various developments such as play money and magic banks from the 19th century, through 20th century toys such as the Ginger Doll that came with her own "Doll-ers" and games such as Monopoly, drawing on the work of scholars such as Maman and Rosenhek (Critical Finance Studies, 2014). At the same time she argues that this tendency is met in the real world through current trends to gamifying finance and banking practices that invite us to trade, bank and file income tax reports through ludic and often cute interfaces, adapting arguments presented in current scholarship on gamification, play and cute aesthetics.
